The Nigerian Navy has arrested personnel involved in a public altercation with soldiers in Bayelsa State during a visit by Bola Tinubu on Friday.
The incident, captured in a viral video, showed uniformed officers exchanging blows in a heated confrontation. In the footage, a driver of a vehicle marked “Naval Police” was seen stepping out to argue with another motorist before tensions escalated.
Shortly after, a soldier approached and threw a punch, triggering a wider melee involving multiple personnel, with sticks and other objects used during the clash.
The scuffle reportedly occurred as the president was departing an event venue, drawing widespread criticism from Nigerians who described it as a display of indiscipline among security forces.
Reacting to the incident, Abi Folorunso, director of naval information, confirmed that those involved have been taken into custody.
“The affected personnel are in custody and already undergoing appropriate administrative and disciplinary procedures in accordance with extant military regulations,” he said.
The navy added that disciplinary measures are ongoing in line with military rules.
