A missile struck a helipad within the compound of the Embassy of the United States in Baghdad on Saturday, according to Iraqi security officials.
Two officials confirmed the incident to the Associated Press, which also reported that footage from the scene showed a plume of smoke rising above the diplomatic complex in the morning.
The embassy compound in Baghdad is one of the largest American diplomatic missions globally and has been targeted several times in recent years by rockets and drones launched by Iran-aligned militia groups.
Images circulating on social media also showed smoke and dust billowing above the embassy after the strike.
There was no immediate response from the Embassy of the United States in Baghdad regarding the incident.
On Friday, the embassy renewed its level four security alert for Iraq, warning about the potential threat from Iran-backed groups.
The alert stated that the groups “may continue to target them”.
The development comes two days after four crew members died when a US military refuelling aircraft crashed in western Iraq.
In a statement issued on Friday, United States Central Command said the Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker crashed at about 2pm eastern time on March 12 while conducting operations in the region.
