Authorities at the Nigerian Army Training Centre (NATRAC) in Kontagora, Niger State, have opened an investigation into an alleged case of child abuse involving a seven-year-old girl within the Kontagora Military Cantonment.
According to the statement shared on Thursday via their Facebook page, it indicated that the incident reportedly occurred on 4 March 2026, when a soldier residing near the apartment where the child lived was said to have heard persistent cries coming from the residence.
Concerned by the situation, he reportedly gained access to the apartment, where the young girl was allegedly being physically assaulted.
According to preliminary accounts, the alleged assault was carried out by two sisters believed to be relatives and guardians responsible for the child’s care.
Initial findings indicate that the child was reportedly punished over questions about her earlier whereabouts.
There are also indications that the girl may have been subjected to other forms of neglect, including alleged denial of food and restrictions from using basic household facilities.
Furthermore, witnesses within the neighbourhood further suggested that the child might have experienced similar treatment previously, despite earlier warnings.
Sources within the cantonment disclosed that the girl had been living with her uncle’s family following the death of her father. She was said to have been brought into the military community so she could continue her schooling under the care of relatives.
Following the report, the Commander of NATRAC, Major General A.G.L. Haruna, directed the centre’s Military Police to begin a detailed inquiry to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The child was subsequently taken to the Kontagora Military Cantonment Medical Centre, where she underwent medical assessment. Officials confirmed that she is presently in stable condition.
Pending the outcome of the investigation, temporary custody of the girl has been placed with another family within the cantonment who volunteered to care for her.
NATRAC authorities reiterated their commitment to the safety and wellbeing of children and dependants residing within military communities, assuring that appropriate action will be taken in line with existing regulations once the investigation is concluded.
