The Rivers State Government has stepped up efforts to strengthen its healthcare system through large-scale recruitment and career advancement for medical personnel across the state.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara announced that thousands of health professionals have been employed to bridge manpower gaps and improve service delivery in public health facilities.
He said the move is part of a broader strategy to ensure residents receive timely and quality medical care.
Speaking at the Government House in Port Harcourt, the governor explained that the recruitment drive covers doctors, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory scientists and other essential healthcare workers needed at primary, secondary and tertiary levels.
According to him on Tuesday, the shortage of personnel in many public facilities had overstretched existing staff and affected efficiency, particularly in rural communities. Bringing in new workers, he noted, will reduce patient waiting time and enhance the quality of treatment.
Fubara also disclosed that hundreds of workers at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital have received long-awaited promotions, a development he described as crucial for staff morale and productivity. In addition, new employees have been deployed to strengthen operations at the facility.
He emphasised that improved welfare for health workers remains a priority, noting that motivated personnel are essential for a functional healthcare system. Promotions, he added, will encourage dedication and professional growth while helping the state retain skilled practitioners.
The governor further stated that manpower expansion is being implemented alongside ongoing upgrades of hospitals and primary healthcare centres to ensure that improved infrastructure is matched with adequate staffing.
Health sector observers say the combination of recruitment and promotion could significantly boost service delivery, particularly in underserved areas where shortages of trained professionals have been most severe.
Fubara reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a resilient health system capable of meeting the needs of a growing population, stressing that investing in people is as important as investing in facilities.
Officials indicated that additional training programmes will accompany the recruitment to ensure newly engaged staff meet required standards and integrate smoothly into the state’s healthcare network.
