World leaders, including President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and others, have paid heartfelt tributes to former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 100.
President Tinubu expressed deep admiration for Carter, hailing him as a “beacon of humanity” whose life post-presidency exemplified leadership and unwavering service to global causes.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised Carter’s legacy in peacebuilding, disease eradication, and the promotion of democracy.
“President Carter showed us all how to remain relevant and impactful after leaving office,” Tinubu said.
“He tackled the challenges of the developing world, from combating diseases to mediating conflicts and promoting democratic values. His unwavering commitment to humanity has left an indelible mark on the world.”
Tinubu also highlighted Carter’s historic visit to Lagos in 1978, which strengthened the relationship between Nigeria and the U.S., noting Carter’s role in eradicating Guinea worm disease and river blindness in Nigeria through The Carter Center.
Similarly, former President Olusegun Obasanjo reflected on Carter’s leadership, describing him as a humble leader who exemplified lifelong service to humanity.
Speaking on Arise TV, Obasanjo remarked, “True leadership does not end with tenure. The experiences and relationships gained during the time in office should be used for the betterment of humanity.”
He commended Carter’s post-presidential engagements, adding that Carter’s active involvement in global affairs and his efforts to hold successors accountable were a testament to his dedication to peace and stability.
Carter’s legacy as a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and his tireless efforts in humanitarian work and global diplomacy resonated worldwide, with leaders from Egypt, Israel, China, France, the United Kingdom, and more sharing their condolences.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi praised Carter as a symbol of humanitarian and diplomatic efforts, emphasizing his contributions to preserving the peace agreement between Egypt and Israel.
“His legacy ensures that he will be remembered as one of the world’s most prominent leaders in service to humanity,” el-Sisi stated.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog lauded Carter’s role in facilitating the historic Camp David Accords, which established peace between Israel and Egypt.
“His legacy will be defined by his deep commitment to forging peace between nations,” Herzog said.
Chinese President Xi Jinping acknowledged Carter’s significant role in establishing diplomatic relations between China and the United States, reflecting on his contributions to the development of China-U.S. relations.
In France, President Emmanuel Macron described Carter as a “steadfast advocate for the rights of the most vulnerable,” while British Prime Minister Keir Starmer paid tribute to his “decades of selfless public service,” highlighting his role in the Camp David Accords and his ongoing dedication to peace through The Carter Center and Habitat for Humanity.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also expressed condolences, recalling Carter’s steadfast support for Ukraine’s independence and his commitment to global peace and human rights. “Peace matters, and the world must remain united in standing against those who threaten these values,” Zelensky said.
From Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau remembered Carter for his “compassion, kindness, empathy, and hard work,” while Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva described him as a “lover of democracy and a defender of peace.”
