The United States government has announced that it is reviewing more than 55 million foreign nationals who hold valid visas for possible violations of entry and residency rules.
According to the Associated Press, the State Department confirmed that all tourists and other visa holders are subject to “continuous vetting” to determine whether they remain eligible to enter or stay in the country.
Officials said that if new information is discovered showing a holder is ineligible, the visa will be revoked. Those already present in the US would face deportation.
The State Department noted that factors under review include overstaying the authorised period of stay, records of criminal activity, posing a threat to public safety, or links to terrorist organisations.
“We review all available information as part of our vetting, including law enforcement or immigration records, or any other information that comes to light after visa issuance indicating a potential ineligibility,” the department said.
The measure forms part of President Donald Trump’s broader crackdown on foreigners in the United States.
