The United States and Iran have failed to reach an agreement after 21 hours of high-stakes negotiations in Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital.
US Vice-President JD Vance said Tehran rejected Washington’s terms during the talks.
“The bad news is that we have not reached an agreement, and I think that’s bad news for Iran much more than it’s bad news for the United States of America,” he said.
Vance added that the US requires a “fundamental commitment” from Iran not to develop nuclear weapons.
“We need to see an affirmative commitment that they will not seek a nuclear weapon, and they will not seek the tools that would enable them to quickly achieve a nuclear weapon,” he said.
Iran’s foreign ministry, however, said it did not expect a deal to be reached in one session.
“Naturally, from the beginning, we should not have expected to reach an agreement in a single session,” spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said.
Pakistan urged both sides to maintain the ceasefire and continue negotiations toward lasting peace.
