The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Mumbai office became the focus of a security scare on Friday after receiving a bomb threat via email. The email, written in Russian, was sent to the official account of RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra, warning of plans to target the central bank.
The Mumbai Police quickly sprang into action, registering a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and initiating an investigation. The threat has raised concerns over cybersecurity and the safety of one of India’s most vital financial institutions.
Confirming the incident, Zone 1 Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Mumbai Police, stated: “A threatening email was received on the official website of the Reserve Bank of India. Written in Russian, the email warned of plans to blow up the bank. A case has been registered against unknown individuals at the Mata Ramabai Ambedkar Marg (MRA Marg) police station, and investigations are underway.”
Authorities are working with cybercrime experts to trace the origin of the email and verify the credibility of the threat. Security has been heightened around the RBI headquarters in Mumbai as a precautionary measure.
