Prince Harry confronts social media rumors and legal battles
Prince Harry dismissed rumours about his marriage and personal life during a candid appearance at The New York Times DealBook Summit.
“It’s hard to keep up with all of it,” he joked. “Apparently, we’ve bought or moved houses 10 to 12 times. We’ve also divorced about as many times. It’s ridiculous.”
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have long faced scrutiny, but online rumors about their relationship have intensified in recent months. These claims often center on their increasingly independent work schedules. For instance, while Prince Harry spoke at the summit in New York, Meghan attended the Paley Honors gala in Los Angeles.
Facing social media trolls
Prince Harry expressed sympathy for those spreading falsehoods online, calling their behavior troubling yet pitiable. “I feel genuinely sorry for them,” he said, describing their actions as a reflection of deeper societal issues tied to social media’s lack of accountability.
He also criticized the platforms enabling such behavior, saying, “Social media companies have virtually zero accountability or transparency, yet they rake in billions. It’s a broken system.”
Despite the constant rumors, Prince Harry shared that he is enjoying his life in the United States. He believes the move has allowed him a level of privacy that would have been unattainable in the UK.
“I’m living a life I never thought possible,” he said. “It feels like the life my mother wanted for me. I’m grateful for this chapter.”
Privacy battles in court
Beyond addressing online gossip, Prince Harry discussed his ongoing legal battles against British tabloid publishers. He emphasized his commitment to holding them accountable for alleged unlawful practices.
Speaking about his privacy claim against News Group Newspapers (NGN), publishers of The Sun, he declared he would not settle. “The goal is accountability. It’s really that simple,” he stated.
The Duke remains one of only two claimants actively pursuing the case. The other is Tom Watson, a former deputy leader of the Labour Party. Over 1,300 similar claims have already been settled, with NGN denying wrongdoing.
“They’ve settled because they had to,” Prince Harry remarked. “But for the other victims, there’s been no justice. I’m the last person who can fight for closure on their behalf.”
Criticism of legal systems
Prince Harry did not hold back when discussing the challenges of seeking justice in the British legal system. He highlighted a rule where claimants who reject a settlement offer larger than the awarded damages must pay both sides’ legal costs.
“This system forces you to settle,” he explained. “Even if we win, I’ll still be liable for enormous legal fees. There’s no justice for the victims.”
The Duke’s determination stems partly from his decade of military service, which instilled values of persistence and accountability. “These principles guide me. I can’t just walk away,” he said.

Reflecting on personal growth
Prince Harry also touched on how therapy has helped him cope with the loss of his mother, Princess Diana, and the relentless media scrutiny he has faced since childhood.
“I realized there’s no point holding onto anger or resentment. It wouldn’t change anything and certainly wouldn’t be what my mum wanted,” he said.
Still, he acknowledged the toll these experiences have taken. With a wry smile, he called himself a “professional litigant” but added that he plans to “retire” from legal battles soon.
A changing world
The Duke expressed concern about how the world is shifting, making it harder for people to stand by their values. “It’s tough to stay true to principles when everything around you is changing,” he said.
His message, however, was not one of despair. Prince Harry remains committed to his causes, whether advocating for social media reform or fighting for justice in the courts. His resolve is a testament to his belief in accountability, fairness, and the enduring impact of his mother’s legacy.
While online rumors and legal challenges continue to swirl, Prince Harry appears undeterred. His focus remains on building a life of purpose and integrity, no matter the obstacles.
