Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, has warned that Iran’s war-damaged infrastructure is significantly hindering diplomatic progress, as Donald Trump extends a key deadline tied to escalating tensions.
Speaking on Special Report on Monday, Sheikh described Iran as a “war-torn country” struggling with disrupted communication systems, making it difficult for negotiators to receive timely responses from Tehran. His remarks come amid intensified efforts to de-escalate hostilities between the United States and Iran.
Pakistan has positioned itself as an active mediator, attempting to facilitate dialogue between the two adversaries. Sheikh stressed that diplomacy is inherently gradual but expressed cautious optimism that talks could advance in the near future. He pointed to Iran’s recent decision to allow limited oil tanker movement through the Strait of Hormuz as a potential sign of goodwill.
Meanwhile, Trump has delayed a 48-hour deadline previously set for Iran to clear the vital shipping route. He also ordered a pause on U.S. strikes targeting Iranian power infrastructure, signalling a possible shift towards negotiation. The former president described ongoing discussions as “very good” and suggested they could lead to a “complete” cessation of hostilities.
Sheikh emphasised that a ceasefire would be a crucial first step, though he noted that any meaningful agreement ultimately depends on both parties demonstrating genuine commitment to peace.
Pakistan’s role in the crisis is complex. The country is simultaneously managing its own regional tensions with India and Afghanistan while maintaining strategic relationships with Saudi Arabia, China, the United States and Iran. Analysts caution that Islamabad’s ability to remain neutral may become increasingly strained as the conflict drags on.
Despite these challenges, Pakistan has emerged as a key diplomatic player. While it has previously condemned strikes on Iran, it has also supported a Gulf-backed United Nations resolution criticising Tehran’s regional actions—highlighting its delicate balancing act.
Sheikh expressed appreciation for the trust placed in Pakistan’s mediation efforts, noting that the country’s leadership is actively engaging with global counterparts to foster conditions conducive to dialogue.
