President Donald Trump, said late Sunday that negotiators in Washington and Moscow have begun discussing the division of assets between Russia and Ukraine in an effort to end the fighting, Russia’s Kommersant newspaper has said..
A few miles behind the front line with Ukraine on Monday, there were clear signs of fierce fighting in Russia’s southwestern Kursk even as the Trump administration touted its efforts to end the three-year war.
On Monday, an NBC News team saw three trucks carrying what appeared to be bodies of Russian soldiers, and many more transporting the injured away from the battlefield in the heavily militarized region.
Two other trucks hauled a pair of American Bradley Fighting Vehicles — a tank-like workhorse used to carry troops into battle — apparently left by retreating Ukrainian forces.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Kommersant newspaper also ran a large picture of President Donald Trump, who said late Sunday that negotiators in Washington and Moscow have begun discussing the division of assets between Russia and Ukraine in an effort to end the fighting.
Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that he plans to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday and that they would discuss “dividing up certain assets,” including land and power plants.
“I think we have a lot of it already discussed by both sides — Ukraine and Russia,” Trump said. “We want to see if we can bring that war to an end. Maybe we can, maybe we can’t, but I think we have a very good chance.”
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed the planned call between the two leaders during a press briefing Monday, but provided no further details.
