President Donald Trump has issued his strongest message yet to Iranian protesters, declaring that “help is on the way” as the United States openly considers military action against the Islamic Republic amid a deadly nationwide crackdown.
In a dramatic post on his Truth Social platform, Mr Trump urged demonstrators to press on, warning that Iran’s leaders would face severe consequences for what he described as mass killings of civilians.
“Iranian Patriots — KEEP PROTESTING. TAKE OVER YOUR INSTITUTIONS,” he wrote. “HELP IS ON THE WAY. The killers and abusers will pay a big price.”
The message came as unrest in Iran entered its third week, with one Iranian official telling Reuters that as many as 2,000 people may have been killed since protests erupted. The demonstrations, among the largest since the 1979 revolution, have spread across towns and major cities, posing one of the most serious challenges to Iran’s clerical leadership in decades.
Diplomacy Halted, Military Options Loom
Mr Trump said he had cancelled “all meetings with Iranian officials until the senseless killing of protesters stops,” signaling a sharp break from diplomatic engagement. He has repeatedly warned that military force remains an option and said earlier this week that he “would not be afraid to use military power” if necessary.
Senior U.S. officials told American media that planning for strikes against Iran had reached an “advanced stage,” with U.S. forces across the Middle East placed on heightened alert. Mr Trump was expected to meet with national security advisers to decide next steps, amid signs he is increasingly leaning toward military action.
The president has already announced a 25 per cent tariff on goods from countries doing business with Iran — a move expected to hit China hardest — as part of a broader effort to isolate Tehran economically.
Brutal Crackdown Inside Iran
Inside Iran, security forces have launched a sweeping and violent crackdown. Reports from doctors and human rights groups describe hospitals overwhelmed with victims suffering gunshot wounds to the head and neck, following what witnesses say is a new close-range shoot-to-kill policy.
Internet access was cut nationwide last Thursday in what activists say was an attempt to conceal the scale of the bloodshed. Bodies have reportedly been left outside morgues as families desperately search for missing relatives. Although limited international phone calls resumed Tuesday after more than 100 hours, internet restrictions remain largely in place.
Iranian authorities have accused the United States and Israel of orchestrating the unrest and warned against any foreign intervention.
Executions and Growing International Outrage
International alarm intensified after a human rights group warned that Erfan Soltani, a 26-year-old shop owner detained during protests last week, is due to be executed on Wednesday. His family has reportedly been granted just ten minutes to see him before his hanging.
“We have never witnessed a case move so quickly,” said Awyar Shekhi of the Hengaw Organisation for Human Rights. “The government is using every tactic to spread fear and crush dissent.”
In London, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said she had summoned Iran’s ambassador over what she described as “horrific reports” of killings and repression. Speaking in Parliament, she announced sweeping new sanctions targeting Iran’s oil, energy, nuclear and financial sectors.
“I expressed the UK’s total abhorrence of the killings, the violence and the repression,” she said after speaking with Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi.
Citizens Told to Leave
Amid fears of imminent escalation, the U.S. government has urged American citizens to leave Iran immediately, advising evacuation by land through Armenia or Turkey if necessary. Britain also updated its travel guidance, warning nationals to reconsider remaining in the country due to escalating risks.
As global pressure mounts and Washington signals readiness to act, the standoff appears to be approaching a decisive moment — one that could reshape Iran’s future and ignite a wider regional conflict.
