The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Shin Bet security agency have claimed responsibility for an air strike in the Qatari capital, Doha, which they say targeted senior members of Hamas’s leadership.
In a joint statement, the IDF and Shin Bet described the operation as a “precise strike” against figures they accused of directing the group’s activities, including the 7 October 2023 attack on Israel, and of managing the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The statement said measures were taken to minimise civilian casualties, including the use of precision munitions and additional intelligence gathering.
“For years, these members of the Hamas leadership have led the terrorist organisation’s operations,” the statement read. “They are directly responsible for the brutal October 7 massacre and have been orchestrating and managing the war against the State of Israel.”
It added that Israeli forces would “continue to operate with determination” to defeat Hamas.
Qatar’s foreign ministry issued a strong condemnation of the strike, calling it a “cowardly Israeli attack” on residential buildings housing members of Hamas’s political bureau. Ministry spokesperson Dr Majed Al Ansari said the assault was a “blatant violation of all international laws and norms” and posed “a serious threat to the security and safety of Qataris and residents in Qatar”.
According to the ministry, Qatari security forces, civil defence units and other relevant authorities responded immediately to contain the incident and ensure the safety of residents and surrounding areas. Dr Al Ansari said Qatar “will not tolerate this reckless Israeli behaviour” or any act targeting its sovereignty, and confirmed that investigations were under way at the highest level.
Two Hamas sources told Reuters that members of the group’s ceasefire negotiation delegation survived the strike. The Israeli prime minister’s office confirmed the attack was a “wholly Israeli operation”.
Qatar, along with Egypt and the United States, has been mediating indirect talks between Israel and Hamas in an effort to secure a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages. The incident is expected to further complicate negotiations, which have already faced significant obstacles.
The strike in Doha marks a rare instance of Israeli military action on Qatari soil. Qatar has hosted Hamas’s political leadership for years and has played a central role in mediation efforts during the current conflict.
No casualty figures have been released, and both Israeli and Qatari authorities have said further details will be provided as investigations continue.
