A shooting in Brooklyn on Thursday afternoon has left one man dead and his twin brother injured, while the suspect remains at large, police have confirmed.
The incident occurred at approximately 2.40pm in the East New York neighbourhood, at the junction of Sutter and Euclid Avenues.
Officers were dispatched to the scene following reports of an assault. Upon arrival, they discovered two men, both aged 20, suffering from gunshot wounds.
One of the victims was identified as Darius Coles, of Brooklyn.
According to the Office of the Medical Examiner, Mr Coles had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. He was transported to Brookdale Hospital Medical Centre, where he was later pronounced dead.
His twin brother, whose name has not been released, was found with a gunshot wound to the leg and a graze wound to the head.
He was also taken to Brookdale Hospital and is reported to be in a stable condition.
Police sources stated that the suspected gunman fled the scene on foot, heading east along Sutter Avenue.
He was last seen wearing a red tracksuit, white trainers, and a white shirt. Officers recovered multiple shell casings and a box cutter from the location.
The motive for the shooting has not yet been established. Detectives from the New York Police Department’s 75th Precinct are leading the investigation, which remains ongoing. No arrests have been made at this stage.
Residents in the area reported hearing multiple gunshots shortly before emergency services arrived. Several streets surrounding the crime scene were cordoned off for several hours as forensic teams examined the area and collected evidence.
The East New York neighbourhood has experienced a number of violent incidents in recent years, prompting community leaders to call for increased police presence and investment in local youth programmes. Thursday’s shooting has renewed concerns about public safety in the district.
Authorities have appealed for witnesses or anyone with information about the suspect’s whereabouts to come forward. The NYPD has urged members of the public to contact its Crime Stoppers hotline, stressing that all calls will be kept confidential.
Brookdale Hospital Medical Centre confirmed that the surviving victim is receiving treatment and is expected to recover from his injuries. Hospital officials declined to provide further details, citing patient confidentiality.
The death of Mr Coles marks another addition to the city’s tally of fatal shootings this year. Police statistics indicate that while overall crime rates have fluctuated, gun-related incidents remain a persistent challenge for law enforcement agencies.
As the investigation continues, officers are reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding area in an effort to trace the suspect’s movements before and after the shooting. Detectives are also conducting interviews with witnesses and canvassing nearby businesses for additional evidence.
The NYPD has reiterated its commitment to bringing the perpetrator to justice and ensuring the safety of residents in East New York.
