An airport in Florida is set to bear the name of President Donald Trump after the state legislature passed a bill authorising the change on Thursday.
The Republican-controlled Florida legislature voted to redesignate Palm Beach International Airport as the “President Donald J. Trump International Airport,” according to official state records. The measure now awaits the signature of Governor Ron DeSantis, who is widely expected to approve it despite previously clashing politically with Trump.
Located in Palm Beach, an affluent coastal community known for its beaches and high-end properties, the airport sits just minutes from Trump’s private estate, Mar-a-Lago.
Before the new name can take effect, the change must also be cleared by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
If finalised, the airport would join a growing list of landmarks and institutions associated with Trump’s name. In December, the board overseeing the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts — a cultural venue and memorial to former President John F. Kennedy — voted to rename itself the “Trump-Kennedy Center.”
Trump, long known for branding properties with his name during his real estate career, has also reportedly explored renaming Pennsylvania Station in New York and Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia after himself, though those proposals did not move forward.
Separately, the U.S. Treasury Department has confirmed reports that draft designs have been prepared for a commemorative $1 coin bearing Trump’s likeness, despite existing laws that prohibit placing the image of a sitting or living president on U.S. currency.
