Elon Musk, the tech billionaire, has stepped in to offer financial support to United State (U.S.) airport security personnel affected by a federal funding standoff.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees have been working without pay since mid-February due to a bitter political dispute in Congress over immigration enforcement tactics.
Musk announced on X that he’s willing to cover the payroll for TSA employees, citing the “negative impact” on workers and American travelers.
This move comes as the agency’s 65,000-strong workforce faces an annual payroll of $2.5 billion to $3 billion.
The funding crisis stems from Democrats blocking Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding in protest of current immigration policies, including demands for reforms to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The prolonged lapse in funding has led to resignations, with over 300 TSA officers leaving since February 14, and unscheduled absences doubling, causing longer security lines at major hubs.
Musk’s offer adds complexity to the debate over federal responsibility and private intervention in national security. Some officers have resorted to second jobs or food pantries to survive, highlighting the human impact of the funding standoff.
