President Joe Biden will participate in a series of Inauguration Day traditions of US President-elect Donald Trump, marking his last day at the White House.
Despite his frustrations over the political dynamics that led to his departure, Biden has chosen to uphold the ceremonial customs associated with the peaceful transfer of power.
White House officials confirmed that Biden will host Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for tea at the White House.
Following this, the two leaders will ride together in the motorcade to the Capitol for the swearing-in ceremony. In line with tradition, Biden also plans to leave a letter for his successor in the Oval Office.

“There was never any debate about whether the outgoing President would participate in these traditions.
“It was very important to him to honour the traditions, do this by the book, and as history has laid out,” said a White House official familiar with the planning.

The decision comes in stark contrast to Trump’s actions four years ago. In 2021, Trump notably skipped the customary Inauguration Day courtesies, including attending Biden’s swearing-in ceremony or leaving a letter for him in the White House.
While out going President has remained steadfast in adhering to these rituals, sources close to him revealed his lingering frustration over being forced out of the 2024 presidential race and the blame he has faced for Trump’s re-election.
Despite these personal grievances, Biden is determined to emphasize the importance of continuity and respect for democratic traditions.
Today’s events underscored Biden’s commitment to maintaining the dignity of the office, even in the face of political challenges and personal disappointments.
