The Green party has chosen former mayoral candidate, Hannah Spencer as its candidate to contest in the Gorton and Denton by-election.
The Trafford councillor and plumber by trade previously lived in the constituency and was the Green Party’s mayoral candidate for Manchester in the 2024 election.
The election was announced officially in Long sight on Friday after local party members made the decision democratically in online hustings held the night before.
Spencer, after the announcement said: “This is a crucial by-election. The choice is clear – Green v Reform. Hope v hate. Only the Green party can stop Reform in this byelection. I want to thank every single member and supporter who has already been out on the doorstep listening to voters.”

The party leader, Zack Polanski said: “Hannah Spencer will be a brilliant MP for the people of Gorton and Denton. I’m a Mancunian and know when someone genuinely wants to roll up their sleeves and work for the community. Hannah is that person.”
The Greens has become the second party to declare their candidate for the constituency, after Reform UK announced the conservative commentator and former academic Matt Goodwin as their choice on 27 January.
The seat is one for which the Greens feel they are well placed to challenge, with Polanski framing the contest as a “battle for the soul of our nation”.
The party has also secured its first campaign endorsement, with pressure group the Muslim Vote backing the Greens in protest at other parties’ positions on the war in Gaza. The Greens hope the support will help mobilise Muslim voters, who make up around 30% of the constituency’s population.
