EasyJet has suspended one of its captains following reports that he was seen walking naked and intoxicated through a luxury resort in Cape Verde.
According to The Sun, the incident occurred in the early hours of 5 August at the Melia Dunas Beach Resort and Spa, where the pilot had been staying. Witnesses claim the pilot, who has not been named, had been drinking heavily at the hotel bar before stripping off and wandering through public areas of the five-star resort.
Guests reported seeing the pilot, described as reeking of alcohol, walking unclothed through the hotel reception and into the gym and spa around 2:30 a.m. local time.
“He didn’t have a stitch on and was clearly very drunk,” an airline insider told the newspaper. “Anyone who saw that wouldn’t feel safe knowing he was supposed to be flying them home.”
The pilot was scheduled to fly an EasyJet service back to London Gatwick on 6 August, more than 36 hours after the incident. However, once complaints were made, the airline replaced him with another pilot and launched an investigation.
Easyjet spokesperson confirms incident
A spokesperson for EasyJet confirmed the suspension and said: “As soon as we were made aware, the pilot was immediately stood down from duty, in line with our procedures, pending an investigation. The safety of our passengers and crew is EasyJet’s highest priority.”
