Nigeria international Wilfred Ndidi has officially joined Turkish giants Besiktas on a permanent deal from English side Leicester City, bringing an end to an eight-year spell with the Foxes. The 28-year-old midfielder has signed a three-year contract with the option of an additional year, as he looks to embrace a fresh challenge in the Turkish Super Lig.
Besiktas confirmed the signing on Thursday, describing Ndidi as a “proven leader and experienced professional” who will add strength and composure to their midfield. The deal marks a significant move for both the club and the player, as Ndidi seeks to rediscover top-flight football after Leicester’s relegation to the Championship in 2023.
Ndidi, who made over 240 appearances for Leicester, played a vital role during one of the club’s most successful periods. He was a pillar in midfield when Leicester lifted the FA Cup in 2021 under Brendan Rodgers, and became known across Europe for his ball-winning ability, positional awareness, and quiet leadership on the pitch.
In his first interview with the club’s official website, Ndidi spoke about his excitement for the next chapter of his career.
“It’s really amazing. Joining Besiktas is a really great feeling,” he said. “It feels really great, very warm, very welcoming. Before I put it [the shirt] on, I kissed the badge, which is very important—it shows my love.”
His words reflect a genuine enthusiasm for the project at Besiktas, a club that boasts a passionate fanbase and a rich history in Turkish football. Ndidi’s move also continues a long tradition of Nigerian stars excelling in the Super Lig, with the likes of Daniel Amokachi, Uche Okechukwu, and more recently Henry Onyekuru all making their mark.
Having arrived at Leicester from Genk in January 2017, Ndidi quickly established himself as one of the Premier League’s most reliable defensive midfielders. His tireless running, tackling prowess, and intelligent reading of the game earned him plaudits from pundits and fans alike. At his peak, he was linked with some of Europe’s biggest clubs, but remained loyal to Leicester during both triumphs and struggles.
His decision to stay with Leicester following their relegation in 2023 was widely respected, but with the club failing to gain immediate promotion back to the Premier League, Ndidi has opted for a new environment and a chance to compete for silverware once again.
Besiktas, who finished third in the Turkish Super Lig last season, are expected to be strong contenders for the title in the upcoming campaign. Ndidi is likely to slot straight into the starting lineup, where his experience and physical presence will be key as the club also prepares for European competition.
The move could also have positive implications for Nigeria ahead of next year’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. A regular role at Besiktas will keep Ndidi sharp and in the national team spotlight, as the Super Eagles aim to build a strong midfield around him and the likes of Alex Iwobi and Frank Onyeka.
While the transfer fee has not been disclosed, it is believed to be a modest sum, reflecting Ndidi’s contract situation and Leicester’s financial reality. For Besiktas, however, the value lies in acquiring a seasoned international player still in his prime.
As Ndidi begins a new journey in Istanbul, fans of both Leicester and Besiktas will be watching closely. For the midfielder, the move represents not just a change of club, but an opportunity to reignite his career, chase new trophies, and continue making Nigeria proud on the global stage.
