Former Bayer Leverkusen head coach Erik ten Hag released an official statement following his abrupt dismissal after just two Bundesliga matches in charge.
The Dutch manager, who arrived in the summer, failed to secure a league win during his short tenure. His reign began with a 2-1 home defeat to Hoffenheim and ended with a dramatic 3-3 draw against ten-man Werder Bremen.
Although Leverkusen cruised to a 4-0 victory over fourth-tier Sonnenhof Großaspach in the DFB-Pokal first round, the result did little to ease pressure after a poor league start.

In a statement shared via journalist Fabrizio Romano’s Instagram page, Ten Hag described the decision as shocking and unprecedented.
“The decision by Bayer Leverkusen’s management to put me on a leave of absence came as a big surprise,” he said.
“To part ways with a head coach after just two league matches is something absolutely unprecedented.”
The 55-year-old stressed that building a new team required patience, especially after several key departures in the summer.
“This summer, many players who contributed to past successes left the squad. Building a new team is a careful process that requires both time and trust. A new manager deserves the space to implement his vision, set standards, shape the squad, and leave a mark on the style of play.”
Ten Hag added that he started the role with conviction but felt the club had not backed him sufficiently.

“I started this job with full conviction and energy, but unfortunately, the management was not willing to grant me the time and trust I needed. I feel this was never a relationship based on mutual trust. Throughout my career, every season I have been allowed to see through has brought success and silverware.”
He thanked the fans and wished the club well. “Finally, I would like to thank the Leverkusen supporters for their warmth and passion. I wish the squad and staff every success for the remainder of the season.”
