Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen has been ruled out of Tuesday’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against South Africa in Bloemfontein after sustaining an injury during the win over Rwanda.
The 26-year-old forward limped off midway through the first half following a challenge, and subsequent medical checks confirmed he would not travel with the squad.
Super Eagles Media Officer Promise Efoghe disclosed that the team doctor diagnosed a chin bruise, which left the striker in discomfort on Sunday morning.

Osimhen’s absence represents a major setback for Nigeria. With 26 goals in 41 international appearances, he has been the heartbeat of the Super Eagles’ attack.
Beyond his scoring record, his pressing, hold-up play and tireless work rate have made him indispensable, particularly at AFCON 2023, where his relentless energy kept the team competitive even when goals were scarce. Whether starting or coming off the bench, his presence often transforms games.
In his absence, Tolu Arokodare seized the spotlight on Saturday, scoring the decisive goal in Uyo as Nigeria edged Rwanda 1-0. The 24-year-old striker, introduced after the break in place of Frank Onyeka, pounced on a goalmouth scramble in the 51st minute to register his second international goal in just four appearances.
His physicality, close control and relentless pressing unsettled the Rwandan defence throughout the second half, earning him the Man of the Match award.
While Osimhen returns to Galatasaray for further assessment and treatment, Nigeria must now look to alternatives in attack.
Cyriel Dessers, who replaced Osimhen after his withdrawal, struggled to impose himself against Rwanda, highlighting the challenge the Eagles face without their talisman.
Arokodare’s promising display offers encouragement, but consistency will be crucial if Nigeria is to keep their World Cup campaign on track.
The win over Rwanda preserved Nigeria’s qualification hopes, but the race remains finely poised.
