The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) has initiated a statewide talent identification programme, dubbed “Catch-Them-Young”, to scout for and develop promising young athletes for the upcoming 2025 National Youth Games and future competitions.
The trials are designed to create a sustainable pipeline of talent that will represent Lagos at both national and international levels.
The multi-sport trials, which began several weeks ago and are taking place at various sports facilities throughout the state, are open to young athletes between the ages of 9 and 14.

Disciplines being covered include track and field, swimming, gymnastics, boxing, weightlifting, table tennis, badminton, basketball, football, chess, and traditional games like ayo.
Speaking at a recent track and field trial, Lekan Fatodu, Director-General of the LSSC, highlighted the strategic importance of this early talent identification.
“The ‘Catch-Them-Young’ programme reflects our dedication to discovering and nurturing raw talent from the grassroots,” Fatodu stated.
“We believe that every child in Lagos has the potential to become a world champion, and this comprehensive trial system is creating pathways for young athletes to turn their dreams into reality.”
He added that the initiative is not only crucial for preparing for the 2025 National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, but will also serve as a long-term legacy program for the state’s sports development.
Fatodu also revealed that the commission is in talks with international sports development organisations to secure partnerships that would provide additional training and exposure for particularly gifted athletes discovered during the trials.

The LSSC’s efforts include organising training camps and maintaining strict adherence to age eligibility rules to ensure fairness and proper development.
The programme focuses on strengthening sports where Lagos has a strong history of success while also exploring new potential across all athletic disciplines.
