A 43-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the deaths of two young children in Stafford, Staffordshire Police have confirmed.
The victims, identified as Meraj Ul Zahra, aged two, and Abdul Momin Alfaateh, aged three, were found unresponsive at a property on Corporation Street around 7:30am on Sunday.
Paramedics from the West Midlands Ambulance Service attended the scene but both children were pronounced dead shortly after their arrival.
Police said both children were found with injuries, and their next of kin are being supported by specially trained officers.
The arrested woman, from the Stafford area, remains in custody as detectives continue their investigation.
Detective Inspector Kirsty Oldfield described the incident as tragic and urged the public not to speculate while investigations were ongoing.
“We are working hard to understand more about what happened leading up to these two children tragically losing their lives, we ask that people do not speculate as it could hinder our inquiries and is distressing for family and friends.”
The incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) because there had been recent police contact with those involved before the children’s deaths.
An IOPC spokesperson confirmed they had received a referral from Staffordshire Police and would assess whether further action was needed.
A police cordon remains in place around the property, though officers said there was no wider threat to the public. Anyone with information is urged to contact Staffordshire Police.
