British-Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua has made a heartbreaking visit to a Lagos funeral home to bid farewell to his late friends, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, following his discharge from hospital. The heavyweight champion sustained minor injuries in the accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Monday, but tragically, both of his close associates lost their lives.
Joshua, 36, was released from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, where doctors confirmed he was clinically fit to recuperate at home. Accompanied by his mother, the boxer visited the funeral home where the bodies of Ghami and Ayodele were being kept ahead of their repatriation later in the evening.

In an official statement, local authorities said:
“The governments of Lagos and Ogun states commiserate with the families of Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, who tragically lost their lives in the road accident involving Anthony Joshua. We pray The Almighty grant the repose of their souls and give their families the strength to bear this very sad and painful loss.”
The statement added appreciation for the medical team at Lagoon Hospital, the public’s support, and the intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR. Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, confirmed Joshua’s discharge, noting that the boxer is recovering at his residence.
The accident occurred near Makun, Sinoma, Sagamu, when Joshua’s black Lexus SUV collided with a stationary truck parked illegally on the expressway’s hard shoulder. The Ogun State Police Command has arrested the SUV’s driver, and investigations are ongoing. Preliminary reports from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) suggest the crash resulted from overspeeding and wrongful overtaking, with the SUV moving from the right-hand side into the stationary vehicle.
While Joshua escaped with minor injuries, the accident claimed the lives of his personal trainer Kevin Latif Ayodele and strength and conditioning coach Sina Ghami. Two other passengers escaped unharmed.
The tragedy has sparked outrage on social media, with Nigerians criticizing reckless truck parking and poor road enforcement. Olamide Lawrence, a Facebook user, described Joshua’s survival as “a miracle” and called on authorities to enforce stricter road safety measures. Observers noted that the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has a notorious history of accidents, including the death of late musician Dagrin, with negligence by truck owners and drivers often blamed.
Despite being born in England, Joshua maintains close ties to Nigeria and frequently visits Sagamu, Ogun State, his ancestral home. His most recent visit followed an exhibition bout in Miami, where he defeated Jake Paul.
As investigations continue, the Ogun State Police and FRSC are working to determine full accountability for the crash, while Nigerians await further updates. The tragic incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for stricter road safety enforcement on one of Nigeria’s busiest highways.
