Fired-up Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong has said Zimbabwe should forget about picking any point in Tuesday’s 2026 World Cup Qualifier match in Uyo.
Sources have it that, while Troost-Ekong insinuated that The Warriors of Zimbabwe need not turn up for Tuesday’s game at The Nest of Champions, Eagles’ top scorer, Victor Osimhen, who got both goals in Friday’s 2-0 spanking of hosts Rwanda, tagged the upcoming match as another part of unfolding ‘war’ for the World Cup ticket.
A media statement from the communications department of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) further disclosed the mood among the Eagles’ players on arrival at Uyo’s Victor Attah Airport.
While Osimhen vowed full scale efforts from all the stars in their remaining matches, Troost-Ekong emphasised the need to make history by the current set of players.
The Eagles’ skipper said, “We read somewhere that Zimbabwe are being motivated to come to Uyo and get a result. They should forget it. We are hugely motivated by the ambition to play at the FIFA World Cup.
“Apart from myself and Alex (Iwobi) and perhaps a couple of others, who were part of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, this generation is hungry to play at the highest level. We want to make Nigeria proud and, at the same time, do ourselves proud.”
Osimhen then added that winning Tuesday’s match is imperative to consolidate the Eagles’ revival in the qualification race and to further strengthen their surge up the group’s table, even as he acknowledged that the Nigerians must win all their remaining games at home and away, in order to grab the lone ticket available to next year’s world showpiece.
