Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr has issued a public apology to supporters, teammates, and club officials following his angry reaction to being substituted during Sunday’s 2-1 El Clásico victory over Barcelona.
The Brazilian, who has been one of Madrid’s standout performers this season, was taken off in the 72nd minute at the Santiago Bernabéu. Clearly frustrated, Vinicius headed straight down the tunnel rather than joining his teammates on the bench. Cameras later captured him muttering in discontent, saying: “Always me! I’m leaving the team! It’s better if I leave, I’m leaving,” sparking speculation about his future at the club.
After the match, Vinicius returned to the pitch and appeared to exchange heated words with Barcelona’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal amid chaotic post-match scenes. His conduct drew criticism from pundits and fans alike, with many questioning his temperament and commitment to the team.
On Monday, the 25-year-old took to social media to express remorse for his behaviour, describing his actions as an emotional lapse in the heat of the moment.
“Today I want to apologise to all the Madridistas for my reaction when I was substituted in the Clasico,” Vinicius posted on X.
“Just as I have already done in person during today’s training, I also want to apologise again to my team-mates, the club, and the president. Sometimes passion gets the better of me because I always want to win and help my team. My competitive character stems from the love I feel for this club and everything it represents.”
The forward added that he remains fully committed to Real Madrid’s objectives this season, “I promise to keep fighting every second for the good of Real Madrid, as I have done since the first day.”
Uncertain Future
Vinicius joined Real Madrid from Flamengo in 2018 for £38.7 million as a teenager and has since become one of the club’s most dynamic and marketable players. In seven seasons, he has made 335 appearances and scored 111 goals, helping the team to multiple domestic and European titles.
Despite his achievements, reports in recent months have hinted that his relationship with new manager Xabi Alonso has become strained. Some Spanish media outlets suggest the pair have clashed over tactical instructions and Vinicius’s defensive responsibilities. Alonso, who replaced Carlo Ancelotti in the summer, has implemented a more structured system that demands increased discipline off the ball, something Vinicius has occasionally struggled with.
While his apology did not directly mention Alonso, it was seen as an olive branch by club insiders. Real Madrid are keen to downplay the tension, insisting that internal matters have been handled privately and that Vinicius remains an integral part of the squad.
Fans Divided
The incident has divided opinion among Madrid supporters. Some fans sympathised with the winger’s passion and desire to contribute in big games, while others felt his behaviour undermined team unity and disrespected the manager’s authority.
Spanish newspaper Marca reported that club president Florentino Pérez held brief talks with Vinicius and Alonso after Monday’s training session to ease tensions. The meeting was described as “constructive,” with all parties reaffirming their commitment to maintaining focus on the upcoming Champions League fixture against RB Leipzig.
Looking Ahead
Vinicius has scored five goals in 10 La Liga appearances this season and remains one of Real’s most dangerous attacking outlets. However, speculation over his long-term future persists, with several Premier League clubs reportedly monitoring his situation closely.
For now, Vinicius insists he is focused on helping Madrid chase another league title. His apology may not erase the controversy, but it represents a step towards reconciliation — both with the fans and within the dressing room.
If he can channel his fiery passion into performances on the pitch, Real Madrid may yet see the best of Vinicius Jr once again.
