Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has confirmed that he is in discussions with the club regarding a new contract, as his current deal nears its end. The 33-year-old Dutch defender, who joined Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018 for a then world-record £75 million fee, remains a pivotal figure at Anfield.
With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, Van Dijk addressed the ongoing negotiations, saying, “Discussions are ongoing, we will see what happens in the future. My full focus is on Liverpool, wanting to win games that are ahead of me and nothing else.”
The Netherlands international has been instrumental in Liverpool’s success over the years, playing a key role in winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup.
Despite turning 33, Van Dijk insists he is still performing at his best under new manager Arne Slot. “I feel good, physically, mentally and I am having fun,” he said. Slot’s management has seen Liverpool top the Premier League with seven wins in their opening eight games, with Van Dijk leading from the back.
While Van Dijk remains tight-lipped on the exact details of the contract talks, he assured that a decision will be made in due time. “When it’s time to make a decision, you guys [the media] will know it as well.”
Liverpool fans will be eager to see Van Dijk extend his stay at the club, as his leadership and experience continue to be vital to their title ambitions this season.
