Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier has revealed that he accepted a pay cut to join the club from Atlético Madrid, dismissing claims that money was his primary motivation.
Trippier, 34, made this known following Newcastle’s 2-1 triumph over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday. Speaking in an interview with CBS Sports, the England international reflected on his decision to return to the Premier League and his belief in Newcastle’s project.
Sacrificing for the Bigger Picture
Trippier’s move to Newcastle in January 2022 raised eyebrows, especially since the club was battling relegation at the time. Many speculated that financial incentives played a role in his decision, but the experienced full-back has now clarified his reasons.
“People questioned why Newcastle and why I left Atlético Madrid, but I have no regrets in my career,” Trippier said. “When I signed for Newcastle, they were 19th in the league. People thought it was about money, but I actually took less money to come here.”
According to Trippier, his decision was influenced by family considerations and a desire to be part of an ambitious project.
“I wanted to come back to the north for my family. When I first arrived at the club, there were questions, but I had worked with the manager before. I knew what he expected and demanded, and I wanted to help the club build,” he added.
From Relegation Battle to Trophy Winners
When Trippier arrived at St. James’ Park, Newcastle was struggling to stay in the Premier League. However, the club’s fortunes changed dramatically under manager Eddie Howe. Trippier, who had previously worked with Howe at Burnley, played a key role in the team’s resurgence.
In just two years, Newcastle has gone from fighting relegation to competing for European places and winning silverware. Their victory in the Carabao Cup final marked the club’s first major domestic trophy since 1955, a milestone that Trippier is particularly proud of.
“I wanted to be part of this journey. It was never just about me personally but about helping Newcastle grow,” he said. “Finally, we have got a winner’s medal.”
Leadership and Experience
Trippier’s leadership has been invaluable for Newcastle. His experience playing at the highest levels—including winning La Liga with Atlético Madrid, reaching the Champions League final with Tottenham, and featuring in England’s Euro 2020 run—has been crucial in shaping the club’s mentality.
As one of the senior players, he has also played a mentorship role for younger teammates, helping them adapt to the demands of elite football.
What’s Next for Newcastle?
With their Carabao Cup triumph, Newcastle has taken a major step forward in their long-term plans. The club, backed by ambitious owners, is aiming to establish itself as a consistent top-four contender in the Premier League.
Trippier remains focused on continuing Newcastle’s progress and is confident that the club can achieve even more in the coming years.
“This is just the beginning,” he said. “We have built something special here, and I believe we can keep improving.”
Newcastle fans will certainly be grateful for Trippier’s decision to join the club, as his presence has been instrumental in their transformation from relegation strugglers to trophy winners.
