Despite the painful defeat that has left the entire Nigerian football community in shock, President Bola Tinubu has applauded the Super Eagles for their determination during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
In a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu praised the team’s resilience in the face of the setback.
“Even with the disappointing result, we must acknowledge the players’ commitment and continue to encourage them,” the President stated.
He called on football authorities to thoroughly re-evaluate their strategies to ensure better outcomes in the future.
“We must address every gap. Our football leaders, players, and all stakeholders need to return to the drawing board,” he emphasised.
Tinubu also highlighted the importance of shifting attention to the upcoming African Cup of Nations scheduled for January to February 2026 in Morocco.
“This is the moment to channel all energy toward the Cup of Nations. The Super Eagles must reclaim their lost glory,” he added, stressing that the lessons from the World Cup qualifiers should guide preparations for the continental championship.
Meanwhile, DR Congo advanced to the 2026 FIFA World Cup Intercontinental Play-Off after a tense encounter with Nigeria, securing a 4–3 win on penalties.
As three-time AFCON champions, Nigeria will need to regain momentum quickly as they begin their African Cup of Nations campaign in December.
