Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup remain uncertain after the Super Eagles were forced to a 1-1 draw by South Africa in Bloemfontein on Tuesday. Both sides walked away with a point in a result that keeps Group C finely balanced.
The hosts began on the front foot, pressing high and unsettling Nigeria’s backline. Their early intensity paid off midway through the first half when pressure on captain William Troost-Ekong led to an own goal that handed Bafana Bafana the advantage.
Nigeria, however, rallied before the interval. Calvin Bassey rose highest to nod in a controversial equaliser, ensuring the visitors went into the break level.
The second half brought tactical adjustments from both managers. Nigeria introduced Arokodare and Onyemaechi at half-time, with Arokodare immediately making an impact through a powerful run and shot that narrowly missed. Dele-Bashiru also troubled the South African defence, but his effort was blocked.
South Africa, dealing with an injury setback to Mdunyelma, brought on Monyane and later made further substitutions to steady the contest. Nigeria also reshuffled, with Ndidi leaving injured and Chukwueze replacing Simon as the visitors pushed for a late winner.
Uche came closest for the Eagles with a low strike from the right that rolled just wide, while South Africa managed the closing minutes to secure a draw.
Super Eagles qualification
The new CAF qualifying format allows only group winners automatic tickets to the World Cup, while the four best runners-up fight for a playoff slot.
South Africa remain top of Group C on 17 points and looks on course for qualification, though they still face a possible three-point deduction over an ineligible player issue. Nigeria, sitting on 11 points, trails Benin Republic and Rwanda, who are also level on points but with Benin having a game in hand.
With previously dropped points against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, the Super Eagles now face a daunting task: winning all their remaining games and hoping South Africa falter.
