Liverpool legend and former England international, Steven Gerrard, has revealed his top three midfielders in the world at the moment, highlighting players who have consistently dominated the centre of the pitch for both club and country.
Gerrard, who is widely regarded as one of the finest midfielders of his generation, made the selections during a quickfire interview session with ESPN, where he was asked to name his current top three midfielders.
Without hesitation, the former Liverpool captain named Manchester City’s Rodri, Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister, and Paris Saint-Germain’s Vitinha.
“Rodri, Mac Allister and Vitinha,” Gerrard simply said, giving a nod to the form and influence of all three players over the past season.
Rodri – The Ballon d’Or Winner
Spanish international Rodri has been a key figure in Manchester City’s midfield under Pep Guardiola. Despite suffering a significant injury that sidelined him for several months during the 2024 season, the deep-lying playmaker had already done enough to earn widespread recognition. His composed performances and vital role in City’s treble-winning campaign the previous season earned him the 2024 Ballon d’Or, making him one of the few holding midfielders in history to win the prestigious award.

Alexis Mac Allister – A Liverpool Engine
Alexis Mac Allister, who joined Liverpool from Brighton, quickly became an integral part of Jürgen Klopp’s midfield setup. The Argentine impressed with his technical ability, vision, and work rate, helping Liverpool to secure the 2024/25 Premier League title. His adaptability and calm presence in midfield have drawn comparisons to some of Liverpool’s past greats, and Gerrard’s praise further cements his growing reputation on the global stage.
Vitinha – PSG’s Midfield Maestro
Portuguese star Vitinha had a standout 2024/25 season with Paris Saint-Germain. The 25-year-old was instrumental in PSG’s quadruple-winning campaign, where the French champions lifted the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, Ligue 1, and Coupe de France. Known for his intelligent movement, precise passing, and creativity, Vitinha has emerged as one of Europe’s most complete midfielders.
Gerrard’s Picks Reflect a Balance of Roles
Gerrard’s choices reflect a strong appreciation for midfield versatility. From Rodri’s defensive stability and control, to Mac Allister’s box-to-box dynamism, and Vitinha’s flair and creativity, the three players represent different styles that together form a complete midfield unit.
As a former midfield maestro himself, Gerrard’s opinion carries weight, and his selections spotlight some of the finest talents operating at the heart of modern football today.
