Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – Football legend Ronaldo Nazário has declared his intention to run for the presidency of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), vowing to restore the national team’s prestige and reconnect it with the country’s fans.
The 48-year-old, a two-time World Cup winner with Brazil, seeks to replace current CBF president Ednaldo Rodrigues. Ronaldo’s announcement comes as Brazil continues to grapple with underwhelming performances in major tournaments, having last won the World Cup in 2002 and failed to progress beyond the quarter-finals since.
Ronaldo’s Vision for Change
Speaking to Globo Esporte, Ronaldo highlighted the dwindling public interest in the national team, stating, “Brazilian football was once a source of hope and pride for the people. Today, we see a lack of connection between the population and the national team. My goal is to recover the respect and prestige that Brazilian football deserves.”
He emphasized the abundance of talent in Brazil, mentioning stars like Neymar, Vinícius Jr, and Rodrygo, and expressed frustration with the team’s recent underperformance. “Brazil must be a protagonist in global football. It’s unacceptable for a country with our talent to underachieve,” Ronaldo added.
A Storied Career
Ronaldo, capped 98 times for Brazil, is second on the all-time World Cup scorers’ list, netting 15 goals in 19 matches. His illustrious international career includes two Copa America titles and an Olympic bronze medal.
His commitment to his candidacy includes plans to sell his stake in the Spanish club Real Valladolid to focus fully on Brazilian football.
A Path to Leadership
Rodrigues’ term ends in March 2026, with the CBF presidential elections scheduled to take place within the 12 months leading up to that date. Ronaldo’s campaign promises to bring a fresh perspective, aiming to reestablish Brazil as a dominant force in world football.
Brazil’s Footballing Future
As Brazil looks to reclaim its former glory, Ronaldo’s leadership could inspire a resurgence. Whether his vision aligns with the federation’s needs remains to be seen, but his bid has already sparked excitement among fans longing for a revival of the “beautiful game.”
