Kylian Mbappé has received high praise from former teammate Sergio Ramos, who believes the Real Madrid star deserves this year’s Ballon d’Or even without major titles.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Ramos now playing for Monterrey in Mexico backed Mbappé to take football’s most prestigious individual honour, citing the Frenchman’s exceptional goal tally.
The two players shared the pitch at Paris Saint-Germain between 2021 and 2023. Mbappé, now 26, joined Real Madrid this season another of Ramos’ former clubs and has so far lifted the Super Cup and the Intercontinental Cup.
Mbappé ended the campaign with 43 goals in 56 appearances, earning the European Golden Shoe for his efforts.
“I’d always give it to Mbappé,” Ramos said.
“It’s a decisive trophy, but you never really know what the Ballon d’Or criteria are. He scores goals and won the Golden Boot, even though Madrid haven’t won some of the titles other clubs have.
“These awards are individual, not collective — but there are some very interesting players who’ve won leagues and cups too.”
The Ballon d’Or will be awarded later this year, with competition expected from players such as Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, and Harry Kane all of whom have enjoyed strong seasons at both club and international levels.
