Rahaman Ali, younger brother of Muhammad Ali and a former professional boxer, has died at the age of 82, the Muhammad Ali Center announced on Saturday.
Rahaman passed away on Friday, 1 August. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Born Rudolph Arnett Clay, Rahaman was just over a year younger than his older brother, the legendary heavyweight champion. The pair grew up together in a modest pink house in the west end of Louisville, Kentucky, where they enjoyed wrestling, playing cards, and shooting hoops. Inspired by his brother’s success, Rahaman followed him into the boxing world, competing as a heavyweight from 1964 to 1972.
About Ali
After retiring from the sport, Rahaman remained a constant presence by Muhammad’s side, often travelling and training with him throughout his career. The Muhammad Ali Center described him as his brother’s “biggest supporter”.
“Rahaman was one of the most constant sources of support for Muhammad during his career, and their relationship was a true example of what it means to be ‘my brother’s keeper,’” said DeVone Holt, President and CEO of the Muhammad Ali Center.
Following Muhammad Ali’s death in 2016, Rahaman spoke fondly of him, remembering him as “a really sweet, kind, loving, giving, affectionate, wonderful person.”
“You can’t tell Muhammad’s story without mentioning Rahaman,” Holt added.
Funeral arrangements for Rahaman Ali will be announced in due course, according to the Muhammad Ali Center.
