Police have launched an investigation into threats and abuse aimed at Premier League referee Michael Oliver following Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Wolves on Saturday.
The abuse comes after Oliver controversially sent off Arsenal defender Myles Lewis-Skelly in the 43rd minute for a high challenge on Wolves’ Matt Doherty. The decision, upheld by VAR official Darren England, has drawn criticism from fans and pundits alike.
The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) condemned the attacks in a statement:
“We are appalled by the threats and abuse directed at Michael Oliver. No official should be subject to such abhorrent behaviour, and investigations are underway.”
The Premier League echoed the sentiment, expressing strong disapproval of the actions:
“We strongly condemn the threats and abuse directed at Michael Oliver. Officials deserve respect and support in their roles.”
In addition to Lewis-Skelly’s dismissal, Oliver also sent off Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes later in the match. Arsenal’s Riccardo Calafiori ultimately secured the win with the game’s only goal.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta refrained from defending the red card decision post-match, stating, “It’s so obvious that today you don’t need my words.”
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about abuse faced by match officials. PGMOL noted:
“This is not the first time an official has faced such threats. We remain committed to supporting Michael and tackling this unacceptable behaviour.”
Investigations are ongoing, with authorities and football organizations united in addressing the issue.
