Nigeria international goalkeeper Maduka Okoye will be eligible to feature again for Udinese when they face Cremonese in a Serie A encounter on October 20.
The 26-year-old had been sidelined for the past two months following a suspension handed down in July. The sanction stemmed from allegations of illegal betting linked to an incident during Udinese’s 2-1 victory over Lazio.
In that fixture, Okoye was shown a yellow card in the 64th minute for time wasting. However, suspicions quickly arose that the booking may have been deliberate, prompting investigations into potential misconduct. The case escalated with initial concerns that the shot-stopper could be charged with sporting fraud, a serious offense that carries a possible four-year ban from professional football.
Ultimately, Italy’s disciplinary panel ruled against the harsher charge, opting instead for a lesser conviction of illegal betting activity. As a result, Okoye was suspended for two months—effectively ruling him out of the start of the 2025/26 campaign but sparing him from a much lengthier absence.
The ruling was seen as a relief not only for the goalkeeper but also for Udinese, who have relied heavily on his presence since his arrival in 2023. Okoye, who has established himself as the Zebras’ undisputed first-choice goalkeeper, has been a key figure in stabilizing the club’s defense. His sharp reflexes and commanding presence in the box have earned him respect among teammates and Serie A followers alike.
With his suspension now set to expire, Okoye’s return will be timely for Udinese, who are keen to strengthen their position in the league after a mixed start to the season. His expected comeback against Cremonese offers coach Gabriele Cioffi a much-needed boost as the squad looks to regain momentum.
For Okoye personally, October 20 will mark an important chance to put the controversy behind him and refocus on his career. The Nigerian international will also have one eye on maintaining form ahead of future national team call-ups, where competition for the Super Eagles‘ goalkeeping spot remains fierce.
