The sanctions follow serious breaches during the club’s Matchday 32 clash against Plateau United, which ended in a 2-2 draw at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City on Saturday, March 28.
Bendel Insurance fails to provide adequate security, which allows unauthorised individuals to storm restricted areas inside the venue. The chaos escalates after the final whistle as club supporters unleash unsporting behaviour and hold match officials hostage for 40 minutes. These violations directly breach the league’s safety and governance rules.

Bendel Insurance turns to Kennedy Boboye to revive NPFL campaign
Boboye, a veteran tactician who previously guided Sunshine Stars, Abia Warriors, Plateau United (to their 2017 NPFL title), Remo Stars, Heartland, and Akwa United (to their maiden 2020/21 title, plus a 2025 return stint), takes full blame for his actions toward officials. The league confirms his behaviour violates discipline and fair-play standards.
In addition, the NPFL slaps Bendel Insurance with a N5 million fine for the multiple infractions and orders the club to play its next three home fixtures behind closed doors. Officials stress that the penalties underscore their firm commitment to order, professionalism, and respect for referees, especially in tense situations.
The suspension strikes Bendel Insurance at a pivotal moment. The Benin-based side currently sits in 7th position on the 2025/2026 NPFL table with 46 points from 11 wins, 13 draws, and 8 losses after 32 matches.
