Wilfried Nancy has promised to deliver “exciting, attacking, winning football” after being officially unveiled as Celtic’s new manager on a two-and-a-half-year contract. The 48-year-old Frenchman arrives from MLS side Columbus Crew, ending weeks of negotiations and stepping into one of Scottish football’s most demanding roles.
Nancy will take charge of his first match on Sunday in a top-of-the-table Scottish Premiership clash against Hearts at Celtic Park. That fixture marks the start of a hectic introduction, with a Europa League showdown against Roma and a League Cup final against St Mirren following in quick succession.
“I can’t wait to get going and become part of such a brilliant institution,” Nancy said after signing. “Celtic is one of the world’s proper football clubs—real atmosphere, heart and soul, high standards, big demands. I know the history, I know the values, and I know what’s expected of me. My number one aim is simple: to give the fans a strong, exciting, attacking, winning football team they can be proud of.”
His arrival ends the caretaker spell of club legend Martin O’Neill, who stepped in after Brendan Rodgers resigned on 27 October. O’Neill’s impact has been outstanding: Celtic have won every domestic match under his guidance, moved to within two points of leaders Hearts, and reached the League Cup final.
Nancy paid tribute to the interim boss. “I want to thank the great Martin O’Neill and Shaun Maloney for all they have done in recent weeks. These guys have given so much to the club across so many years, and I know our fans recognise the brilliant job they have done. They have my total respect and gratitude.”
A Coach with Growing Reputation
Nancy’s managerial rise began in North America rather than Europe. After a modest playing career in France, he moved to Canada and transitioned into coaching. In 2021, he took charge of CF Montreal following Thierry Henry’s departure and led them to the Canadian Championship later that year.
A move to Columbus Crew followed in 2022, and Nancy quickly made his mark. He guided the club to the 2023 MLS Cup and added the Leagues Cup the following season, achievements that earned him MLS Coach of the Year. Although this year’s campaign ended with a mid-table finish, his tactical ingenuity and attacking style drew widespread admiration.
Now, after 215 games in North American management, Celtic becomes his first European job—one with far greater scrutiny and expectation.
Hierarchy Full of Praise
Celtic’s leadership made clear Nancy was their preferred choice throughout the recruitment process.
Chairman Peter Lawwell said: “He is a manager with a record that shows the kind of football Celtic supporters love. We sincerely thank Martin, Shaun and the backroom team for stabilising the team and restoring confidence.”
Chief executive Michael Nicholson added: “We have been aware of Wilfried and his quality for some time. He was our number one candidate, and we are delighted he agreed to join. He is hugely excited about this opportunity, and we will give him every support.”
Principal shareholder Dermot Desmond echoed the optimism: “We believe we have brought in a hugely talented manager. He understands the demands at Celtic and has great humility, vision and drive. Martin O’Neill will always be held in the highest regard, and Wilfried steps into big shoes.”
Fans React with Hope—and Caution
Celtic supporters welcomed Nancy with a mix of excitement and realism.
“Big thank you to Martin O’Neill,” wrote Paul. “He’s done a terrific job. Nancy has big shoes to fill—hopefully he seeks O’Neill’s advice in the best way forward.”
Catherine added: “I’m sad to see O’Neill’s last game. Big shoes for the new manager.”
Joss summed up the challenge ahead: “Managing in Glasgow is not for the faint-hearted. Time will tell if he can handle the madness… it always does.”
Nancy steps into the role with enthusiasm, confidence and a clear philosophy. Now, with Celtic chasing trophies on multiple fronts, the real test begins.
