Rivers United FC solidified their place at the top of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) standings after a thrilling 2-1 victory over Akwa United on Match Day 5, a result that brought monetary rewards from Rivers State Sports Commissioner, Chris Green.
The gutsy win at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt saw goals from Stephen Manyo and Ndifreke Effiong lift “The Pride of Rivers” to 13 points enough to leapfrog Remo Stars and claim the league’s top spot.
The victory, their fourth of the season, extends their unbeaten run in the 2024/2025 NPFL campaign, making them the only team yet to taste defeat this season.
Rivers United braved bad weather conditions to secure the win. After the match, Commissioner Chris Green, known for his unyielding support of sports in the state, rewarded the players with a N2 million cash bonus. He praised the team for their fighting spirit and tireless efforts throughout the game.
“I commend you all for the fighting spirit, effort, and zeal which you showed today in this game,” Green said in a post-match address to the team. “However, I urge you all not to rest on your laurels. The league is a marathon and not a sprint, and nothing has yet been achieved.”
This isn’t the first time Green has rewarded the team for their outstanding performances. On September 21, 2024, following their first away win of the season against Lobi Stars in Lafia, Green splashed N500,000 on the management, N1 million to the technical crew led by coach Finidi George, and N2 million to the players.
The victory over Akwa United was another testament to Rivers United’s resilience and skill, positioning them as favorites in the league’s early stages.
Both goalscorers, Stephen Manyo and Ndifreke Effiong, played pivotal roles, showing great composure to break through a tough Akwa United defense.
The team’s next challenge will be maintaining their top spot in the standings as the NPFL season progresses.
Green’s words of caution remind the players that the league is a long and challenging journey. “Continue to fight and push your limits until the final day of the season,” he urged.
With 13 points from a possible 15 and a squad full of confidence, Rivers United has shown they are ready to compete for the NPFL title this season. The backing of Commissioner Chris Green, along with his financial incentives, will surely motivate the players to strive for more as they look ahead to their remaining fixtures.
As of now, Rivers United is the team to beat, and with their unbeaten streak still intact, the Port Harcourt club is well on its way to making a mark in the 2024/2025 NPFL season.
