Michael Carrick is set to be appointed Manchester United’s interim manager until the end of the season, according to reports on Tuesday.
The Red Devils moved swiftly after dismissing Ruben Amorim last week, bringing an end to a disappointing 14-month spell under the Portuguese coach. In the immediate aftermath, caretaker boss Darren Fletcher oversaw mixed results, including a 2–2 Premier League draw with Burnley and a 2–1 FA Cup defeat to Brighton.
Carrick was pictured arriving at United’s Carrington training ground, with official confirmation of his appointment expected later in the day. The former United midfielder previously enjoyed a brief but impressive caretaker spell at Old Trafford in late 2021, remaining unbeaten across three matches.
During that stint, Carrick guided United to a Champions League victory over Villarreal, a league draw away at Chelsea, and a thrilling 3–2 win against Arsenal.
The 44-year-old went on to take his first permanent managerial role at Middlesbrough in October 2022. He remained in charge until June 4, 2025, overseeing 136 matches and recording 63 wins, 24 draws, and 49 defeats. Combined with his United caretaker run, Carrick’s managerial record stands at 139 matches, with 65 wins, 25 draws, and 49 losses.
A club legend, Carrick won 12 major trophies during a 12-year playing career at Manchester United.
Despite the turbulence, the 20-time English champions remain in contention for Champions League qualification. They currently sit seventh in the Premier League, just three points off the top four and one point behind fifth-placed Brentford.
