Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca insisted that his team were the stronger side for large portions of their 1-1 draw against Premier League leaders Arsenal.
Reflecting on the match, Maresca said, “Sometimes you need to appreciate earning even a single point. Of course, our intention was to win.
“At 11 against 11, I felt we were the superior team. We dictated the tempo, controlled possession, and didn’t allow them clear opportunities. The red card shifted everything, but I’m proud of how the players reacted.”
Maresca also highlighted the commitment and resilience his squad displayed.
“When it was level in numbers, we were the better side. Going down to ten naturally changed things, but the players’ work rate was exceptional,” he added.
A number of Chelsea players delivered standout showings, particularly goalkeeper Robert Sánchez and midfielder Reece James. Sánchez pulled off vital saves and commanded his box confidently, while James turned in a powerful, energetic display in midfield.
“Robert was excellent. When you’re a man down against a team like Arsenal, you rely on special performances and Robert and Reece provided that. We’re extremely pleased with Robert’s display. Reece has been outstanding,” Maresca said.
The match’s key moment came in the 38th minute when Moisés Caicedo was sent off for a challenge on Mikel Merino. Despite playing with ten men, Chelsea limited Arsenal to only eight attempts their lowest shot total in any Premier League game this season.
Earlier in the contest, Trevoh Chalobah had put Chelsea ahead, raising hopes of a surprise victory over the league leaders.
