Harvey Barnes struck twice as Newcastle United claimed a 2-1 victory over Manchester City in their Premier League clash at St. James’ Park on Saturday.
After a goalless first half filled with missed opportunities at both ends, Barnes delivered the decisive moments that handed Eddie Howe his first-ever league win over Pep Guardiola.
Newcastle could have gone ahead earlier through Nick Woltemade, who forced two strong saves from Ederson, while Barnes also failed to convert a seemingly simple tap-in. Phil Foden came closest for City but missed narrowly as both sides traded attacks before the break.
The hosts finally broke through in the 63rd minute when Bruno Guimaraes surged forward and slipped the ball to Barnes, who fired clinically into the bottom corner.
City responded immediately, with Ruben Dias dragging his side level five minutes later after his low drive found its way through a congested box.
Newcastle, however, regained the advantage almost instantly. Guimaraes’ looping header rattled the crossbar, and Barnes reacted quickest to stab home from close range.
With Erling Haaland contained for much of the match, City struggled to mount a late push, allowing Newcastle to end a run of two games without victory. The defeat leaves Guardiola’s side sitting third on the table.
Earlier in the day, Liverpool’s faltering form continued with a 3-0 home loss to Nottingham Forest, dropping them to 11th. Chelsea climbed to second after winning 2-0 at Burnley, while Fulham earned a narrow win with Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi in the starting lineup.
