Real Betis midfielder Isco has humorously suggested that the club should crowdfund to extend Brazilian winger Antony’s loan from Manchester United.
Antony, who joined Betis in January for the remainder of the season, has made a significant impact, scoring four goals and providing four assists in 12 appearances. Despite his strong performances, Betis are covering a substantial portion of his wages, with reports indicating they pay at least 84% of his £100,000-per-week salary.
“We have to crowdfund so he can stay at least another year,” Isco joked in an interview with DAZN. “We’ve noticed a change since he arrived; he brings us a lot. I’m happy to have Antony here. He’s surprised us all with his humility and desire to help.”
Since Antony’s arrival, Betis have been in fine form, losing just two of their 12 matches, including a six-match winning streak in La Liga. Their recent 2-1 derby victory over Sevilla helped them maintain sixth place, which would secure European football next season, with the top four qualifying for the Champions League.
Antony’s move to Betis followed a tough period at Manchester United. The £81m signing from Ajax in 2022 struggled for consistency, scoring just once in the Premier League since April 2023 and only featuring in 13 of United’s 33 games this season.
Betis’ record signing remains the £22m they spent on Brazilian winger Denilson in 1998. If Antony’s loan is extended, it could be another monumental step for the club.
