Anthony Gordon has issued an apology to his Newcastle United teammates, fans, and Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk following his red card during the Monday match against the Reds.
The 24-year-old winger received a booking in the first 47 minutes for a challenging tackle on the Dutch defender and Liverpool’s captain, which will render him ineligible to participate in the upcoming fixture against Leeds United.
The repercussions of Gordon’s dismissal left Newcastle with ten players on the field, contributing to their 3-2 defeat at home.

In addition to this recent loss, Newcastle is facing challenges as it now lacks the services of Gordon, who made significant contributions last season with 11 goals, alongside Alexander Isak, whose future with the team remains uncertain.
In a statement posted on his Instagram account, Gordon expressed, “I want to sincerely apologise to my teammates and the fans. My intentions were pure; I was merely attempting to inject energy into the game, but I mistimed the tackle.
”I would never intentionally tackle someone in such a manner. We spoke afterwards, and he understands that.”
