Enyimba head coach Stanley Eguma has praised his team’s emphatic 4-1 victory over Mozambique’s Black Bulls in the CAF Confederation Cup, describing the performance as a morale booster and a gift to Nigerian football fans.
The two-time African champions dominated the match at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Sunday, revitalizing their hopes in Group D.
Speaking after the match, Eguma, who recently assumed the managerial role, reflected on the progress made in a short time. “This result is like a New Year gift to Nigerians because they’ve been yearning for this kind of performance in continental football,” he said.
The coach admitted facing initial challenges but emphasized the importance of instilling a winning mentality. “When I joined, I wasn’t comfortable with what I met on the ground. Key players were injured, but I worked with those available and improvised where necessary,” he said.
Eguma highlighted Brown Ideye’s contributions despite the striker not being at peak fitness. “Ideye is a household name, and his presence is a big plus. He’s still getting match-fit, but he’ll add more to the team soon.”
The coach also commended Innocent Gabriel, a center-back, for stepping up in the holding midfield role in the absence of Daniel Daga, who is heading to Europe.
The win propels Enyimba into contention in Group D as they prepare for a rescheduled NPFL match against Nasarawa United in Aba on Wednesday, followed by a must-win clash against Egypt’s Al Masry in Uyo on Sunday.
With renewed confidence and Eguma’s tactical overhaul, Enyimba aims to re-establish their dominance on the continental stage.
