As the Super Eagles prepare for their crucial semi-final playoff clash against Gabon, controversy has erupted over the appointment of South African officials to handle the match — a decision that has raised serious questions about fairness and neutrality.
According to reports, Tom Abongile from South Africa will serve as the centre referee, with Zakhele Siwela appointed as assistant referee, while Akhona Makalima will oversee the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) duties.
This appointment has stirred outrage among Nigerian football fans and stakeholders, given the recent history between Nigeria and South Africa.
Tensions between both nations’ football bodies have been high since then, with South African officials accusing Nigeria of pushing FIFA to sanction them. South Africa’s Sports Minister, Gayton McKenzie, even publicly expressed his desire for Nigeria to miss out on World Cup qualification.
In light of this backdrop, many Nigerians have criticized the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA for allowing South African referees to officiate such a high-stakes fixture.
Broadcast journalist Buchi Laba wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “If the NFF is a serious football federation, they should immediately appeal CAF’s appointment of South African referees for the Gabon vs Nigeria playoff. All South African referees — both on the pitch and VAR — why? It’s stupid! They don’t want Nigeria at the World Cup.”
Another fan, Devoyce, added: “I can’t believe FIFA made such an appointment for a crucial game like the one against Gabon. CAF didn’t even think a reshuffle was necessary. South African officials should be nowhere near that match — it’s just wrong!”
Sam Eric also weighed in on post on Sport Radio Brila Fm page, alleging foul play: “I can boldly confirm that the NFF has been compromised. Either they’ve collected money to look the other way or CAF’s president is trying to make up for the dodgy qualifier draw that favored South Africa.”
Other fans echoed similar frustrations. David Uduojie remarked that the referees’ list was released even before Nigeria’s player list, while Kelvin Nnabuike accused CAF of “fixing the plan” against Nigeria, and Bolaji Innocent lamented that “South African officials will once again decide our fate
