Chelsea’s hopes of climbing the Premier League table have taken a major hit, with manager Enzo Maresca confirming that Cole Palmer will be sidelined for at least another six weeks.
The 23-year-old midfielder, who has quickly become a standout performer since his move from Manchester City, hasn’t featured for the Blues since limping off early in the first half of their 2-1 loss to Manchester United on September 20.
Initially, Maresca had expressed optimism that Palmer would return shortly after the October international break. However, speaking to the media on Friday, he admitted that the injury layoff would be far longer than expected.
“I was wrong,” the Italian coach said. “Unfortunately, he needs to be out for probably six more weeks. So, yes, this is the update.”
The silver lining, however, is that Palmer will not require surgery, a possibility that had raised concerns among both fans and the coaching staff. Maresca emphasized that the club is prioritizing a full recovery rather than rushing the England international back into action.
“We try just to protect Cole as much as we can,” he explained. “The most important thing is that when he comes back, he’s fully recovered.”
Palmer’s absence leaves a significant creative void in the Chelsea squad. Since joining the team, he’s emerged not only as one of their most influential players but also as one of the most consistent attacking threats in the league. For Maresca, finding a replacement with similar attributes is no easy task.
“We need to find different solutions,” he admitted. “We need to find different skills, because we don’t have another player like Cole. He is unique.”
Chelsea, currently facing a critical run of fixtures, will now need to adapt without one of their brightest stars. Maresca’s tactical flexibility will be put to the test starting this weekend, as the Blues travel to face Nottingham Forest.
