The interim manager of the England national team Lee Carsley is not looking forward to be made substantive manager, according to reports. The Irish took over the leadership of the Three Lions after Gareth Southgate left the role during the summer. Carsley was appointed on an interim basis to oversee three national team camps from September to November. Overseeing his second England camp, he has managed the Three Lions in three games so far, leading them to victory against the Republic of Ireland and Finland. However, he and his team were shocked by Greece with a 2-1 defeat at Wembley on Thursday.
There have been speculations over the England manager role, with many believing Carsley may be assigned the role permanently, leaving substantive appointment as the Under-21 manager. Telegraph Sport, however, reports that the former Everton midfielder is content with his role in the Under-21 side. Carsley spoke concerning this during the pre-match press conference ahead of England’s all-important game against Norway on Sunday. He expressed his pride in the Under-21 manager role and the kind of job he does with the team. He said, “Hopefully is a word and a phrase I use quite a bit. There’s no guarantees in life, including tomorrow. It’s a job, the U21’s, that I’m really proud of and massively invested in. But I know there’s no guarantees. But the plan is to give this job [England’s senior side] for three camps the best I can do along with the rest of the staff and hopefully, we can be in a good position.
“I wanted to give this job my best shot for three camps. I didn’t want to have any regrets. I think it’s important that we do try something different at times and I think I’ll be a better coach for that, but I think we’ll be a bit more conventional tomorrow night.”
England travel to Helsinki to face Finland on Sunday evening with the question over the team’s managerial role still hanging. One of the many names linked to the job is Thomas Tuchel, the former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager who is currently in between jobs. The German is also linked to Manchester United where manager Erik ten Hag is currently under intense pressure. Whoever would assume the role of England’s manager would inherit the decades-old expectation to win a major international silverware for the country. Southgate came close twice, first on home soil at the Euro 2020, losing to Italy at the final in Wembley. He came close again in the summer losing his second straight Euro final, this time to Spain. Southgate also led England to an impressive World Cup run to the semi-final in Russia back in 2018.
