Flying Eagles captain, Daniel Bameyi, delivered a performance to remember as Nigeria battled to a thrilling 3-2 victory against Saudi Arabia at the ongoing 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
The hard-earned win, played out in dramatic fashion, reignited Aliyu Zubairu’s side’s hopes of progressing in the competition after a slow start.
It was Bameyi, the calm yet commanding leader at the heart of Nigeria’s defence, who ultimately made the difference.
With the score locked at 2-2 deep into stoppage time, the 19-year-old stepped up under immense pressure to convert a penalty that sealed all three points for his side. His composure from the spot capped off a Man of the Match display that combined defensive discipline with leadership qualities far beyond his years.
The encounter was fiercely contested from start to finish, with Saudi Arabia proving tough opponents. Nigeria took an early lead but were pegged back before half-time, as the Saudis exploited lapses in concentration. The second half unfolded in tense fashion, both sides trading blows in search of a decisive edge.
Bameyi’s influence was visible throughout, not only in the defensive line where he marshalled his teammates but also in setting the tone with his work rate and vocal presence.
When Nigeria needed a leader most, he rose to the occasion. His late penalty sparked wild celebrations from the Flying Eagles’ bench and the travelling Nigerian supporters, who know just how vital the result is for their tournament ambitions.
Head coach Aliyu Zubairu praised his captain after the game, noting that his character and determination were instrumental in ensuring the victory. “Daniel showed why he wears the armband,” Zubairu said.
“He led by example, fought for every ball, and when the moment came, he showed great courage to win it for us.”
The Flying Eagles will now turn their attention to a decisive clash against Colombia in their final group fixture on Monday morning.
A positive result in that encounter could secure safe passage into the knockout rounds, with Bameyi once again expected to play a central role.
